Photo by Cludio Sabatino for Bravacasa (April 2012)

I came across these cheery assorted painted tin planters in the April issue of Italian home decor magazine, Bravacasa this past week and thought one could create something similar for a weekend project. The magazine says these are painted paint cans (although they look store bought or professionally made to me) –notice the cut-out cross shape on the bottom with a metal mesh netting for drainage.  In searching on how one could paint paint tins, I came across a clever DIY to make painted paint tin bird feeders (photos below) by Sara at Mom Endeavors - another project definitely worth checking out. I liked her idea of rolling on the paint.  For this project I think assorted colours is the way to go and the glossier the paint the better.  Happy making!

Just a few of the pretty things I spotted at The Cross from their spring event today.  After an inspirational presentation on spring fabrics and colours by Megan and Stephanie, I took a look around the shop which was filled to the rim with goodness!  My favourites (although too many to mention); a floral cushion on a Saarinen chair, a wire lace-like coffee table, bird cloche bell jars, the Josephine Tufted Sofa, and Royal Doulton tapas plates. Thanks to Megan, Stephanie and everyone involved for a lovely event and treats and that (banana bread to die for)! Related:  If you missed it this week, check out the beautiful behind-the-scenes photo shoot Janis posted here, beautiful scenery and colours!

Pssst! Cross layout inspired by this post by Anna Dorfman of Door16 (thought it was perfect for this post)!

Ifi you're interested in marketing for Mother's Day and/or your eco-themed wares, please submit by emailing us here or at (poppytalkblog [at] yahoo [dot] ca) with the words Mother's Day Market in the subject line.  Submission deadline Monday April 2nd/12. Icon Factory Artist Co-operative, Dublin

Hello again, Poppytalk readers! I'm back with another Dispatch from Dublin.

While most of North America was enjoying that heat wave a few weeks ago, Dublin got a dose of early summer as well. In the breezy sunshine, I had a chance to take a walking tour I'd been meaning to take for months.

You may have heard of the Le Cool guides to various European cities. You can visit their website or subscribe by email for your city and get a weekly email about art, design and culture happenings around that city. I love when the Le Cool Dublin guide hits my inbox because it's always a great roundup of under-the-radar happenings around the city.

Through their guide and a few pieces in local papers, I had heard good things about Le Cool Dublin's walking tours, called Le Cool Experience. When the new series of dates was posted on their website, I signed myself up. The tours cost 15 euro each and they notify you by email the night before the tour where you'll meet your guide.

Samuel Beckett Bridge

We met at the new Samuel Beckett Bridge and walked east toward Dublin port and then back along the River Liffey toward the City Centre. Our tour started with a welcome and introduction from our tour guide, Michael, who told us a little about the bridge's architect before leading us on a rambling walk around the City Centre.

Aoife Walsh, editor and publisher of the South Circular,

One of the features of the Le Cool Dublin tours is to introduce participants to locals involved in the art or culture scene. Stopped along the Liffey, Michael introduced us to Aoife Walsh, editor and publisher of the South Circular, a new e-journal of short stories from emerging, Dublin based authors. Aoife talked a little about the process of putting together the South Circular and then read to us one of the stories from the first edition.

Icon Factory Artist Co-operative

Each tour is unique; a previous tour visited a letterpress studio and heard a talk from a local coffee shop owner. Our tour involved an impromptu stop at the Icon Factory Artist Co-operative, a chat with a local tailor, and a visit to one of Dublin's oldest barbershops. And along the way, Michael shared little snippets of information about the city and various projects and initiatives going on in the design world.

The tours last about two hours, but you get the feeling Michael wouldn't mind wandering around the city with you for hours, just chatting away.

If you're thinking of visiting Dublin and you know the typical literary or historical walking tours won't be your cup of tea, I would give a Le Cool Dublin tour a try. Just be prepared for a little improvisation - the best parts of our tour weren't even planned!

More pictures after the jump!

Hello! Janis here, from Pinecone Camp.  I was recently part of a huge shoot for the lovely shop The Cross, and wanted to share it with everyone. It was quite the production. Stephanie Vogler and Megan Close booked part of Hycroft Mansion, a stunning heritage building, and loaded it with their beautiful new furniture and accessories for Spring/Summer 2012. Here's a look....

Clothes were brought in by stylist Katharine Horsman.

Katharine prepping Colleen, who kindly agreed to model for us, and Jeremy Grice shooting the video. Such a great team of people to work with. Love these beautiful necklaces by Leah Alexander.

The movers, Callum and Carrington, were fantastic. They moved all the furniture, and then again, when we decided it wasn't in the right spot. They deserve a medal. ;)

Love the colour combo going on here.

I've shot at Hycroft Mansion before, but it never smelled this good!

Trying to shoot outside proved to be a bit crazy. It couldn't have been more windy, so Stephanie stepped in to try and block the wind a bit.

A beautiful combo of coral and lavender shades.

Lunch time.

Playing with books and teacups.

Jeremy setting up a shot, while Stephanie and Megan change up the set.

Nothing says Spring and Summer like citrus colours. Love all the yellow.

Colleen being arranged by Katharine, while Stephanie places the various cushions.

A pretty and inviting setting.

A perfect way to wrap up the shoot. Doughnuts, ribbon and beautiful cake plates. I can't tell you how delicious those doughnuts were.

That's it for the pics, but if you'd like to see a short clip of the video, click here. If you want to get a bit more info on some of these products, go to their online shop, here. If you're in the Vancouver area, lucky you...you can just drop on in.

I like spicy foods so this spicy orange peel tofu meal is pretty close to perfection for me. Actually, I may have gone a bit overboard on the spice.

The folks at Hello Lucky launched some pretty new wedding invitations from Vancouver-based freelance illustrator, Jacqui Lee. Jacqui's beautiful designs are perfect for spring and summer weddings and are equally as appealing for personalized stationery which makes a sweet Mother's Day gift. Pssssst! Hello Lucky is currently offering 15% off all wedding stationery on their site.  Check out all of Jacqui's new designs here!

I recently received for review a copy of Art Lab for Kids, Susan Schwake's new book which is a treasure trove of creative art making projects for kids from drawing, painting, printmaking, paper and mixed media. Although focused on children's projects the book could easily be translated for any budding artist despite the age. In fact I may be looking into trying a few of these projects myself.

In Art Lab for Kids each lesson is inspired by 36 contemporary artists who are also featured in this book from Lisa Solomon to  Mati Rose McDonough, Amy Rice to Heather Smith Jones.  The inspiration list is impressive and well-thought out.

Photographed by her husband Rainer Schwake, the book is a collection of lessons Susan has used over the past twenty years of teaching. From projects started at her kitchen table with her daughter Grace, when she was three, to when she opened up her first little art school in a rented space at a local church. Years have passed and the classes expanded and Susan moved into a larger studio where it has grown into a full gallery/studio/school and online shop, artstream.

Art Lab for Kids is a fun and easy to use book offering up amazing projects for all ages. Available through amazon.com .
