Weekend Project: Mason Jar Pendant Lights

In the back of my mind for a while now I've been wanting to make some mason jar pendant lights and have always wondered how it really was done.  To me they seem like the perfect DIY (not too difficult, not too long to make and they look great)! I'm sure if I really thought about it I could figure it out, but was happy to land upon this one (image below) from Kenzie at Secret Pocket. I love the jars she scored too, apparantly dating back before 1910. And as an alternative idea, aren't these Easter coloured ones (above) by BootsNGus cute? See Kenzie's how-to here. Thanks Kenzie!

Could you believe that I carried in my move from the US 2 boxes full of some super cool water bottles that I still hope one day to transform into super cool pendant lights ( one day I will but I won't tell which year...).

andrea @ strawberry-chic - hmmmm - i guess it depends, i like the idea of hanging them over a dining table (if they are a cluster of them) or how kenzie did - if you had an open area above your kitchen cabinets?

Thanks for this post, I love old glass jars filled with flowers and candles! I always have a few hanging from the verandah - these mason jars are lovely.

The lights are gorgeous and we just bought the IKEA lights (HEMMA) to make one. Unfortunately the Secret Pocket instructions leave out one very important detail: ventilation holes in the lid. My resident engineer quoted Ideal Gas Law which basically states that without ventilation holes, the old gas jars can explode due to pressure caused by the heat of the bulbs. The glass of old canning jars becomes brittle when exposed to light. So, add ventilation holes and be safe. =)

Amazing! I have an uncanny (ha!) love of mason jars and use them for everything around the house - my husband complains that he hasn't seen a proper drinking glass in years!
