Weekend Project: Make a Vintage Chalkboard

weekend project

If you haven't picked up Chatelaine lately, do! They have a new editor in chief Jane Francisco, formely from Style at Home and Wish, along with Wish art director Sandy Kim. The June issue is showing off their new look and also contains a sweet home section, including a few fun and easy (they claim 10 minutes) DIY projects. I thought this vintage chalkboard would be fun to do as a weekend project. Here's the how-to per Chatelaine:

1. Prep. Bring the empty frame to the lumberyard or hardware store and have a single piece of quarter inch MDF cut to fit. Most stores will custom cut for free.

2. Roll. Prime the board and let dry, then paint it with chalkboard paint. Put the board aside to dry and move on to the frame. Shortcut. Pour the paint directly on the MDF surface so you don't dirty a tray and pitch the roller when you're done (maybe not the most eco-friendly thing to do).

3. Spray. Place the frame in a well ventilated area dn spray away. It may take two or three coats.

Pop the board back into the frame, secure it with a few finishing nails and you're done!

I've always wanted to try something like this.... do you know if the chalkboard paint itself needs multiple coats or just one?

Thanks! oxo

I love this idea!
Pouring the paint right on the MDF is a good idea, but I'm not sure how eco-friendly throwing out the roller is, though.

This is one of my favorite things to do! Actually Martha Stewart has a how-to for making custom-colored chalkboard paint, and it's pretty easy and fabulous!

Here's the link!

I love this!
I'm really liking the look/feel of Chatelaine again! I used to work there about 5 years ago and since then it's gone through a lot of bumps - I'm glad to see it's finally back to a look that feels warm and welcoming!

Great, love it. Did you know that you can also get magnetic paint?

Ladygrey - it doesn't say - sorry.

chococotton - you're so right and i was thinking of leaving that short cut out here - maybe i should...

Penelope - i don't think the chalkboard paint is spray here but the frame paint is.

Charlie and Caroline - yes that would be cool here too!

Awesome!! Love this idea! Great way to reuse old frames, instead of throwing them out. I'm presently painting one wall of our office with chalkboard paint. I'm pretty excited!
