Poppytalk Handmade Earth Day Giveaway!
To celebrate Earth Day's 40th Anniversary today and our "Green Pop" eco-themed market at Poppytalk Handmade this month, we are excited to be offering a giveaway starting tonight here on the blog!
We're offering up a $150 gift certificate at Poppytalk Handmade (from something in the current Green Pop Market) to the lucky winner who comments in this post's comments box (and offers a tip on being good to the Earth and visits our market telling us their favourite piece). One entry per person, and a bonus entry if you tweet about this giveaway (adding @poppytalk to the tweet along with a link to the tweet in the comments).
The $150 gift certificate must be used before the end of our current market, May 7th, 2010. Choose one thing, or many as long as it adds up to $150 (total). You can leave a comment at this post anytime from now until next Wednesday (April 28/10) at 12pm noon. We will pick a winner and announce Thursday (April 29th)! Good luck and thanks for visiting our artists at our eco-themed market.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 295 of 295the bags by scabby robot are beautiful. i could easily tote one of those.
earth day activity: our cottage bathroom mantra..if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown let it drown. :)
thanks for hosting this giveaway.
I've been eyeing the small messenger bag from stash for ages! Url here: http://www.poppytalkhandmade.com/node/6643
A good earth day tip will be to off your switches if they're not in use. It all adds up! Which reminds me, I should do a check around the house;)

I love the Letterpress Things that are Round Poster. So clever!
Tip: Turn off your computer at night, standby isn't enough. It's good for your electricity bill and your computer!
I love, love, love, the blue and white striped tick pillows.
I am an avid freecycler in several of our towns in Chicago. If I have something that is in good working condition and is still viable for someone, I post it on the site and as long as someone is willing to pick it up, it goes to someone who can use. That way it prevents throwing out items and filling up our landfill. The items have to be free as well.
i'm kinda loving the stash herringbone wool messenger bags.
eating less meat is one of the best ways to help the environment. if you can't cut back on your meat consumption, trying to buy local and grass-fed makes a big difference too.
omg it is so hard to pick one thing from Poppytalk, but I think it might be Spool + Sparrow's linen pintuck apron...
As for helpful hits - geez there are so many. It would be nice if people actually stopped to use the recycle bins in public places, likewise cutting apart your plastic soda can connectors, turning off lights if your not in the room, avoid purchasing/using bleach products, etc.
too good to be true!
buy and eat local whenever possible. and i love all the key racks at Half Pint Salvage.

scabby robot totes
--save water ...shower with someone --
I try to buy handmade goods made from vintage or salvaged materials, among other things... I guess, that's my favorite eco tip. :)
And I love pretty much anything Jill Bent makes... and I'm smitten with bananosaurus rex's bunting.
xo,
-maria
Some artwork by Matt Stephens would be super nice!
I buy most of my clothing, home furnishings and decorations from resale shops, Goodwill or tag sales. I recycle items religiously and all my kitties were rescue babies who are spayed and neutered.
I love emilie friday's stamps. Amazing!!
a tip on being good to the Earth : recycle the glass opening (door) of an old washing-machine into a fruit bowl! I have three and they look great!
I visited your awesome eco-market and my favourite piece is an aromathrapy perfume by "Illuminated Perfume" http://www.poppytalkhandmade.com/gallery72

Wow Earth Day is already 40 years old!
My tip is to turn your computer off at night, especially your office computer. Or if you don't want to wait for it to boot up in the morning, consider just turning off the monitor - they use a lot of energy :)
In the market right now I love all of Katherine J. Lee's pieces - especially the pennant shams. So simple and whimsical.
It will be hard to decided from all the great things. My tip would be to really consider what you are planting. If you are planting a tree in the front yard think out a fruit tree. Planing veggies in the front yard and backyard is a great way to use all your space. Also really consider joining a CSA if you are not growing everything yourself.
Also, my tweet! http://twitter.com/colormi1
I love all the things made by half pint salvage : nice and useful.
A tip : on friday, I give my boxes to my favorite seller at the market and she fills it with her nice cooking the next friday. No more plastic.
At the market, I choose the sellers who wrap the vegetables into banana leaf instead of plastic bags.
Hello from on island in the Pacific ocean
Christine cho
I love the two blue cats sham and the elephant hook!
my tip is simple: instead of leaving the faucet in the sink on to wait for the water to be warm use that water to rinse the dishes off. don't let it go to waste!
The fig and ginger bird necklace for my mum.....
use vinegar and water for cleaning the windows with a reusable shammy...
Tip: bring a container. It never really occurred to me I was harming the environment more when the restaurants wrapped my food in styrofoam. I bring an empty container so I can just reuse.
My favorite piece is the barclay cowl from kove. It looks super warm and easy to match with.
i love all the pillows in the shop. so cute!
I try to recycle everything I can. a little goes a long way!!
Recycle-- even if you don't get curbside pickup! It's more than worth the extra effort!
Plant your own veggies! It's fun & healthy for us & the earth! Once you start, you'll be hooked!
Has to be the NOONIE...as I envision my baby on the way cuddled in that!
Thanks for this!
keep your lights turned off when not using - my fiance is constantly yelling at me to do better at that !
I love this seller - awesome!!
http://www.poppytalkhandmade.com/gallery31
the no whining pillow is cute
i like to try to buy more local with our fruits and vegetables.
i love the work Erinzam!
i've been trying to read my papers more online these days - cutting down on the paper I use.
Love the work of Matte Stephens!
Oh my gosh what a generous giveaway! Like lots of other people, I am in love with the coffee sack baskets from Brin & Nohl.
One of my eco efforts this year has been towards reducing my use of paper towels. I keep a big stack of rags underneath my kitchen sink and use them to clean up most spills, wipe down counters and tables, and I even use them to clean in the bathroom. The only thing I still use paper towels for is the occasional oil-based mess.
what a lovely giveaway!
I love the pillow cover by coucou salut or handbag by Karen Meyers!
my earth tip is to always try to repurpose used furniture instead of buying new. A little elbow- grease and low VOC paint and you've got a "new" piece with history and personality. : )
I love the coffee sack baskets from brin and nohl. I think my tip would be to buy secondhand or vintage. There is so much cool stuff already in existence, you don't have to buy something new. You might have to look a little harder, but that's the fun, right? :)
tip: if you make spaghetti, reserve the water you boiled the spaghetti in and use it to wash the dishes! Not only does it easily remove grease (as good as any dish-washing liquid!) but it's also safer for you and the planet because there are no nasty chemicals from dishwashing liquids.
my fave product from the market: I really love the stash billfold wallet! all the patterns are lovely.
i like the
word bubble pendant.
I use vinegar mixed with water
for cleaning and keeping my skin
in good shape. Works great on rough
hands and heels.
Thank you.
My tip:
Buy bulk whenever possible to reduce the garbage you produce. Most natural foods stores have bulk beans, grains, peanut butter, oils, honey, shampoo, cleaners, and so much more. Bring your own jars or bottles and refill as needed - no more trash!
My favorite/s:
Scabby Robot's Wedge Tote in Cedar
Be Charmed's Triple Wrap bracelet
1canoe2's Garden fabric
Happy Earth Day!
Tips: 1)Wash and reuse your zip lock bags. You would be surprised how long they last! 2) Turn of the water while you lather (your hair or your body) in the shower. It saves a ton of water. 3) Buy a collapsible clothes drying rack to use instead of the dryer. It works great for an apartment (or if you don't want to/can't put your clothes outside to dry) cause it's easy to store in a corner (or between the washing machine and the wall).
My favorite things in the market are the laptop cases by nottypooch, the bags by scabby robot, and the bella headband by nest pretty things. (Sorry, it was impossible to choose just one!)
still not too late for the giveaway?
i love elisa shere jewelry !!
My favorite is Scalloped Necklace.
In my country, we differentiate, waste,
separates waste into plastic, glass, paper and everything that we can recycle.
I hate wasting electricity to the point I 'nag' to those who forget to switch off the lights when they leave the room, etc. :P Before going out or sleeping at night, I make sure all the plugs in unused rooms are switched off. I don't like leaving TVs/game consoles on standby mode cos they consume energy.
And oh! You have so many lovely things in store! I love the Hello Friend Earrings, the Bella Headband and the Talia Charm Necklace!

i love jill bent's cabbage rose tote!
one of the things i do is walk as much as i can instead of driving and eat local, sustainably raised produce, eggs, and milk.
thanks for the chance to win!
I like the birds white-painted cast-iron wall hooks from monkey & squirrel.
To help the earth, use eco-friendly dish liquid and laundry detergents. Recycle glass, plastic, and others items.
Use reuseable shopping bags.
I use only non-toxic art materials when creating arts and crafts.
My favorite product is the bride & groom dolls by JIll Bent. Oh but my other favorite product is the cabbage rose tote by Jill Bent! They are both soo cute, I want them for my wedding!!!!!!! What a great shop!! I hope I win!
any of the bags by scabby robot is what i'll be getting!
I love Figs and Ginger, their mother's necklaces are so sweet.
My tip: Get a couple of chickens for your backyard! They are sweet and incredibly low maintenance, they eat your table scraps, aerate and fertilize your garden and provide you with the freshest, yummiest eggs every morning. Plus you know you are getting your food from an animal that is happy and loved. Win-win.
What don't I love? I have definitely been eyeing the clothespin pillows from coucousalut...beautiful!
Eco Tip- Buy old furniture and pretty it up! New furniture typically has off-gassing fumes and is not always made sustainably....if you spend a little time hunting for unique pieces and personalizing them to fit your own space it is so much more gratifying in the end!
My way of being nice to the earth is a lot of things, I love to recycle packaging for gifts, visit green produce stands, and love to visit national preserves to help fund them and bring awareness!
i adore everything in the jill bent and inklore shops, such lovely work. my 'green' contribution is to switch from plastic containers to glass...keeping seasonings and such inside glass containers and just buying refills instead of a whole new plastic bottle.
I love the fairview wrap. So cozy looking and beautiful.
It's the little things that count - one thing I always do is wash my laundry in cold water.
I love the products in Illuminated Perfume - wonderful scents are a sure fire way to recharge my batteries. A great way to reduce your household wastes and be kind to your garden is to compost. Even apartment dwellers can compost with compact worm composters. Around our place we have 4 compost piles on the go.
I love the Bella Headband from Nest Pretty Things, very cool golf leaf headband..
As for earth friendly tips, having participated in a beach clean up of an area beach today I have to say that's a great way to clean up a beautiful area (youd be amazed how much litter there is once you really look), get a outside & bit of exercise, and to meet others in the area who care.
I'd also have to say read the book Ishmael, and pass that along. Creating awareness will do a lot.
Tips: I use cloth diapers, recycle, use washable containers when I pack my husbands lunch instead of plastic baggies, (even for things like yogurt and cottage cheese--it saves money that way too verses buying individual yogurts, I just buy a big one and portion it out)and I'm going to start a compost pile. I'm excited to see how little our trash can will be full with all our recycling and composting!
Favourite piece: birds of a feather from monkey and squirrel. I need to hang things :)
And my tweet :)
http://twitter.com/thePeaTree/status/12850452409
I love scabby robots wedge bags.
My tip for the earth, plant your own vegetable garden and share with your friends and neighbors.
A necklace from NEST is on my wishlist for a long time! ...http://www.poppytalkhandmade.com/gallery77
Green tip :: try to raise awareness here in Asia too!
and here is my tweet:
I love the Jill Bent Cabbage Rose tote. My tip is to bring totes/reusable bags with you when you go shopping to use instead of plastic and paper bags.
There are so many incredible tips on here; definitely a few that I'm going to start incorporating into my routine!
My tip- as a librarian, I'd say, go to your local library. Rent your books and movies instead of buying them, if you can. If the library doesn't have what you're looking for, ask your friendly librarian (wink!) if they can get it for you, interlibrary loan.
My favorite items in the Green Pop market? The NottyPooch billboard banner laptop sleeve (those colors! WOW!) and Katherine Lee's yellow pennant shams. Delightful.
Oh! Of course I've tweeted this:

Gettin' the word out...
Cheers,
mindi
I love the yellow roses on blue print and the lovely notecards by 175designstudio.
I have always been watchful of not wasting things and to reuse and recycle. We use eco-friendly water bottles, I use cloth instead of paper towels, we recycle most of our stuff, I use scrap paper for notes and lists and I started growing veggies at home.
I would so love the chance to spend $150.00 in the earth market!
I love the wedge totes by scabby robot (the name scabby robot just makes my heart sing).
Here's a tip...feeling overwhelmed but want to green up your life? Start small. One week start by buying unbleached coffee filters. Next week try not running the tap while brushing you teeth. Then try walking to to get your morning coffee and bring your own cup. You will be surprised how quickly you can shift your focus to a greener life by making little changes. The trick is just to start!
so many things to choose from! Love isphotography pictures :)
I'm an oceanographer, so: NO plastic bags for sure! my tips are:
-buy local food and goods when you can
- recycle: better to repair than buy a new one
- do not use toxic products
Thanks for the opportunity!
Love the crayons from Chase Dreams...the rubber ducks, the moustaches and the love hearts!
For the environment - wash your clothes in cold water and always air dry (no tumble dryers). Your clothes will last longer too!
I love Jill Bent's beautiful bags at 36 Shea.
My earth day tip would be to think about having a local food strategy, like growing your own food, without pesticides, even if it is just a tomato plant and some herbs on the deck. You can't get more local and organic than that.
Thanks for offering this lovely gift to all of us! i just went to your sight and couldn't believe my eyes: Monkey and Squirrel has a hook called birds of a feather that is exactly like the one I had to leave in our last home when we moved. It's beautiful...
It's hard to pick one item. I loooove Dude & Chick's sense of humor. But then I own some of their cards and I don't own any of Matte Stephens' paintings, so I'll go with any painting by him.
Tip for earth day: CSAs! I love supporting local farmers and farms, while getting vegetables that taste much better than anything you get at the supermarket. Seriously, you have not really had a cucumber until it is straight from the ground--it's a whole different taste.
Happy Belated Earth Day, all!
So many gorgeous items... it's not easy to choose just one !! I love the messenger bags by stash....
I think Earth day can start at home .... we look forward to spending time cleaning up wayward litter that has washed up along the roads near where we live.
prettydreamer @poppytalk http://poppytalk.blogspot.com/2010/04/poppytalk-handmade-earth-day-giveaway.html
oh boy, what a giveaway !! thanks a lot Jan !
my favorite (it was tough to choose, though !!) is World On Lap blue vichy eco-friendly lap tray.
my tip is to use soap (bar) instead of shower gel, and aleppo soap (for men or women) for shaving instead of any shaving foam or gel. Saves a lot of packaging, money & chemicals
I'm on my way to tweet it too.
thanks again :)
Stash's stuff is just amazing (especially the pleated clutch!). Deny the standby! Turn it off at the wall :)
and my tweet is : http://twitter.com/cozymemories
Tweeted it!
www.twitter.com/greengoat77
The "Hello Friend" earrings from Nest Pretty Things. I just bought them - couldn't resist.
As far as Earth day and treating our native Mama with respect - think globally, act locally and start simply - RECYCLE! RECYCLE! RECYCLE! As a FB group declares: "Recycling...it's not that f*cking hard!"
my tip is: *really* get at least one child to realise that our planet is alive just like ourselves (and our dear pets).
and my absolute fave in your shop is Wedge tote - Cedar. actually, i love every single piece created by scabby robot.
here comes my tweet: http://twitter.com/feelingual
I really love Nest Pretty Things' Persimmon Earrings.
My Green tip is to ride your bike to visit friends close by.
My tweet: http://twitter.com/nmbrsbypnt/status/12898164156
i love everything!!
simona
*le sigh* Is there anything I don't want in the Market right now? Everything's just so well crafted and imaginative!
My Earth Day tip is lead by example, especially for those of us that have children. I've never had to tell my daughter to use the recycling bin, turn off the water while she brushes, or turn off the light in her room when she leaves. She sees my husband and I do it, so she just follows suit.
I'm in love with Jill Bent's Cabbage Rose tote! I love reused fabrics and that cozy old English look!
One of my fave ways to help Mother Earth is to use old fashioned cotton handkerchiefs, and I'm going to be giving all my taje out loving friends crocheted cup holders to save on heinous "double cupping"!
Happy Earth Day! A great way to be good to the earth is just to turn down your heat & put on some slippers & a sweater (or two). (It's still chilly where I am.)
It's difficult to pick a favorite item, but the covered wagon toy by Willow Baus is charming as are the sleeping bunny pillows.
currently loving scabby robots green tote.
we love to craft with our garbage here. toilet paper telescope. every scrap of paper becomes a mixed media piece. figuring how to make "cute" trees and cars from the trash is the task at hand.
I guess my tip would be that growing your own food & flowers is a heck of a lot easier than you think! I've been doing it since I was 8 years old and it's such a great way to live.
As for the market place... I love EVERYTHING from half pint salvage! gorgeous stuff.
What a great giveaway~ It was hard to pick one thing. I really like the kove shrug though, it would be so nice on a summer night.
We moved to a small town so that we could be within walking distance of everything we need (including the local farmer's market!) It's not possible for everyone to do, but reducing our dependance on our vehicle made a huge positive impact on our lives.
Reading the comments to this post is truly inspiring: thanks!
My eco tips are:
- being vegan since a lot of time
- travel without airplane since a lot of time
- not buying things made/produced far away from me
- not buying things seen on advertising (even when the advertising says "Ecofriendly"). They work in order to make us buy, buy, buy and this is one of the biggest problem of our planet!
And then: is so hard to say which item I preferre. They all are amazing. Maybe junxtaposition hang tags?
Love your work!
My favourite item from the market (amongst many) is the Spring Leaves Coat Hanger by Monkey and Squirrel. ADORIBLE!
My earth day tip is to use cloth diapers for all your cleaning needs. They wash up amazingly, and they do windows wonderfully - no streaks, no fibres left behind. Polishing everything is easier with cloth diapers!
Eat Locally! Visit your local farmers market and frequent restaurants that buy local as well!
And I love the bunny earrings from Figs and Ginger.
i've started composting which i'm really enjoying!
love lisa congdon!
i've been re-using any plastic bags i get as garbage bags.
i like jill bent's things
Wow, I love everything! But I am really liking Monkey & Squirrel's wall hooks and Kiki and Polly's prints.
My tip is using reusable bags for snacks instead of ziplocks. I see bananasaurus rex has some cute ones!
What a great giveaway!
Easiest thing ever: use a Brita water filter (or something similar) to filter your tap water instead of buying plastic water bottles.
wow, ok! sooooo many favourites! I have a top 4, because I cannot choose!!
- Monkey and Squirrel's cast iron mooooooose!
- Green Thread's Birches Organic
- Green Thread's Sleeping Bunny No.1
- Scabby Robot's Sand Wedge tote
My green tip is simply natural light, it is beautiful, use it!!! open your curtains, move your furniture near to your windows, and when it gets dark, oil lamps, candles, etc are a very romantic alternative :) Also, switch those appliances off at the wall!
I would have to say that the Oh Darling Bunting from Bliss in a Teacup is my favorite! I also really like everything from jill bent.
Favorite earth friendly Tips: Buy local products when you can. also, try to buy products that have less packaging.
~Jessica Anne
I tweeted the giveaway as well:
http://twitter.com/TheMissinThread
I love the Fall Brights Birds Mobile from Willow Baus.
A great way to be good to the Earth is upcycle anything you can!
I tweeted about your giveaway!
http://twitter.com/omgchocfrog
I love the cast iron bird hook from monkey & squirrel!
My green tip is to visit your local farmers' market or grow your own veggies. Not only are you helping the Earth, but the food is sooooo much better!
Oh goodness, everything is so lovely, but I just adore the pillows by Coucou Salut and the baskets from Brin & Nohl.
One thing I do to help the earth is use homemade cloth maxi pads. I made my first batch almost 9 years ago and haven't had make new ones since! It saves so much waste from going into the landfills and bleach from leaching back into the water supply. Plus they are comfortable and cute, with bright recycled flannel fabrics and pearl snaps!
Matte Stephens print...I love his style.
I haven't done this yet but now I will. Collect rainwater to water the plants.
I really love Claudia Pearsons prints. When at a coffee shop, if you've got no where to be, ask for an in house mug thats ceramic. I'm often surprised how many coffee houses ask you if your coffee is 'for here' and then still give you a paper cup with a plastic lid.
A good tip that I enjoy is to shop at the local farmer's market, and to bring your own basket or bag to bring your food home in. It completely eliminates food packaging which is a huge waste. And I LOVE the salt-and-pepper lunch bag by downhomeamy :)
i like the idea of small cars, but mostly riding my bike whenever i can.
my favourite thing in the market - can i just say i love them all? if i have to pick...i think i'll say 1canoe2
Hellow!
I love your site, It is a pleasure to visit.
