Wow these remind me of my grandparents Family Room from back in the day, but this is clearly more up-to-date. Never thought I would enjoy seeing wood panels come back, but you have pleasantly changed my mind.

I went to a friends house the other day and she had wood panelling. The place felt so cozy and comfortable. Perfect for rocking chairs, home rustic cooking, gnome toys and crochet blankets. Thanks for your pics - I love them.

Perfect for a rustic home. Combined with the sheepskin looks so royal!xo

We had wood panels on just one wall in our bedroom growing up and I always liked it. It was comforting some how and gave me something to do when I couldn't fall asleep at nap time, I'd look for all the images the knots made.

It makes my skin crawl. Enough with recycling crappy trends that every sensible person threw out or painted over.

what a time warp! that top image reminds me of my parent's basement (still) and all the walls in our family cottage growing up - not pleasant.

But running the boards horizontally totally updates the look and makes it feel much less cheap and tacky than that artificial panelling everywhere in the 70's. I could almost tolerate it! : )

Love the horizontal wood paneling, such a modern take on an old idea:)

You know, the horizontal wood paneling actually looks pretty good!! Especially like the paneling in pics 2 to 4.

The top picture scares me!

I always equate wood paneling with the 70s being old fashioned and out dated but these looks really make it stylish

I think the wideness of the boards is what keeps these rooms feeling modern, too skinny and you're thrown back to 1970!

these all look so cozy + inviting.

I'm loving everyone's comments lately - thank you all for leaving one. It's good to hear both good and not so good. So I can get a feel for my readers.

Design Ties - you know I think you're right - sideways is definitely the way to go if you were going to "get the look"

Soulflower - I love your comment. And am curious to what it is that really scares you.

Anon - It would be fun to have you working next to me. Your comments made me smile. And I would enjoy more feedback - or even a conversation here - I think it would be interesting!

Erin, i think that's a really good observation, that width makes a difference.

Thanks you guys - keep them coming!

the panels in the top picture look outdated to me in a really bad way...when the planks are large and smooth it looks modern and fresh it can either go classic retro mod or the updated version as least to me. I guess i saw a lot of the top picture as a kid in the 70s. I thought the anon comment was hysterical though.Maybe if the panels were wood stained in a vibrant way? maybe not...thank goodness beauty is in the eye of the beholders and I think every post here is lovely...even when its not my style!

soulflower - that's interesting, i like your take.

what i see is maybe something comforting about the wall (reminds me of a favourite aunts home back in the 70's) - and i think what draws me is that it looks like real wood paneling vs the faux wood sheeting some had back then - and i think the trunk end table and the linen bedding somehow makes it all work - (for me) - but then i think too i'm not really into a too-finished look. i like things to not look too pre-mediated.

I love all of them but the first one. That one looks like a real throwback. Like something you do when the plaster isn't repairable :p

In an effort to make things feel 'rustic', my parents put up faux wood paneling throughout our entire basement when I was a kid. Most of these examples are wayyy nicer than that stuff! Still unsure if I'd cover a whole room with it though.

i really love that wood paneling... also, the cardboard taxidermy. i have a few of the mini's myself, too cute to pass up! :)

I'm all for wood paneled walls! Great post! At first "wood paneling" could be a scary thought since you get whisked away to thinking of the Brady Bunch family wagon that had wood paneling. But not here, I want to try and find a way to incorporate it into our home:)

interesting that some of these are wallpaper. think i'd rather have real wood than paper that looks like wood.

our 1970s cabin at whistler is all wood panel so i have fond regards for it... :)

i agree about the horizontal and wider wood paneling being a more modern take... love it! :)
