But running the boards horizontally totally updates the look and makes it feel much less cheap and tacky than that artificial panelling everywhere in the 70's. I could almost tolerate it! : )

Design Ties - you know I think you're right - sideways is definitely the way to go if you were going to "get the look"
Soulflower - I love your comment. And am curious to what it is that really scares you.
Anon - It would be fun to have you working next to me. Your comments made me smile. And I would enjoy more feedback - or even a conversation here - I think it would be interesting!
Erin, i think that's a really good observation, that width makes a difference.
Thanks you guys - keep them coming!
what i see is maybe something comforting about the wall (reminds me of a favourite aunts home back in the 70's) - and i think what draws me is that it looks like real wood paneling vs the faux wood sheeting some had back then - and i think the trunk end table and the linen bedding somehow makes it all work - (for me) - but then i think too i'm not really into a too-finished look. i like things to not look too pre-mediated.

i agree about the horizontal and wider wood paneling being a more modern take... love it! :)
