Cabin Fever | The VAG Launches Summer 2018 Exhibition

If ever there was an art exhibit that was made for Poppytalk's readership, Cabin Fever just might be it. The Vancouver Art Gallery launches their Summer 2018 Exhibition this week beginning with Cabin Fever (running June 9th - September 30, 2018) which explores the history of the cabin in North America both as an architectural form and a cultural construct. From renderings, artworks and commercial products as well as architectural models, plans and full-scale interventions, the exhibit surveys this iconic yet humble lodging's utility, adulation and prevalance in Canada and the US.



Borrowed from the idiomatic expression for an anxious state of mind resulting from a prolonged stay in a remote or confined place, Cabin Fever which spans the second floor of the Gallery, features scenes from the rustic sanctuary of the kind Henry David Thoreau wrote about in his book, Walden (1854) to minimalist homestead popularized by coffee table books and websites such as Cabin Porn, the cabin and its connotations have evolved over centuries.  Exploring the evolution through three key themes, "Shelter", which introduces the cabin as a practical solution to patterns of westward expansion and emergency relief; "Utopia", which examines the cabin as the ideal locale to practice introspection or to escape the conventions of society; and "Porn", which positions the cabin as an idea fully integrated into popular culture.

"The Cabin Fever" Summer 2018 Exhibition looks like an eye-opening experience into architecture through human existence. Although I can't physically visit the gallery, I would love to be able to experience it. You could record a walk-through and explanation of your work, and use video editing software to create a visual experience for people who can't physically visit your work. The sneak peek is fantastic, but I need more!
