Hotel Style | The Tremont Loft

Nestled in the heart of the Kootenays, is a little gem of an AirBnb called The Tremont Loft; a restoration project of love by creatives, Fiona Richards and Douglas Jones of Cartolina Cards and Cartolina retail store in Nelson, B.C. Over the past couple of years, the couple has restored this 1890's miner's hotel, meticulously bringing it back to life with some of it's original details, and adding modern ones as well, including the beautiful Tremont wordmark they designed. And now it's ready to be shared!

The loft is located above their award winning retail shop, Cartolina in downtown historic Nelson, B.C. There is a private entrance - with stairs from the sidewalk on Baker Street up to the loft. Within walking distance to wonderful cafés, restaurants and retail shops, The Tremont Loft is the perfect space to make your base whether it's a 10 minute stroll down to the west arm of Kootenay lake or a short drive out to the main lake in the summer and skiing in the winter. There are endless things to do in the area.

We asked Fiona to share their story and details about the space:

"Three years ago we bought a very run down 1890’s hotel and restored it to include our retail store and wholesale business on the main floor and boutique hotel style accommodation upstairs - The Tremont Loft. It was fun to bring back the history of the building physically - and also in spirit! Nelson BC was originally a silver mining town in the mountains and is well known for it’s collection of historical buildings on it’s bustling main street. We’ve lived here 25 years."

(More after the jump).

"Renovation revealed a mass of vintage treasures and historical furniture/fixtures. We gutted the whole place and reused and recycled everything we could - including building the beautiful kitchen island out of the original hotel doors from 1891. The suite includes a bar that was originally used to sell bootleg liquor during the war - a number of local old timers happily shared their stories of buying shots of illegal whiskey from the proprietor in the 1940s".

"Some other details: We used unlaquered brass fixtures from England to keep an authentic, tarnished look in the kitchen and bathrooms. We recycled lumber from the renovation to build not only the kitchen island but also the dining table and the bathroom vanity. We used a big, vintage, steel security door and wheels to make the coffee table in the living room".

"The Tremont Loft, is 1400 Sq/ft. Two King size bedrooms, 2 full baths, a chefs kitchen, fireplace, and a private courtyard (you may, or may not, be interested in the fact that the courtyard was a banquet room when we bought the building - we took the ceiling/roof off and made it into an outdoor patio with the old brick walls etc. - Basically turning an inside room into an outside room - (another story down the road maybe?)"

Thank you Fiona and Doug, let's take a look (below)!
