Sneak Peek | IDS Toronto

Nanoleaf
The Interior Design Show in Toronto kicks off this week (January 19 to 22nd, 2017) and this year's show offers up some exciting features! Let's take a look!

The LAB
The LAB is where technology and design meet. This curated section will feature the newest and latest technology, apps and gadgets for design trade professionals and homeowners. Curated by Pete Forde of itsme.

Part of The LAB at IDS, Nanoleaf Aurora (inspired by the beauty of the Aurora Borealis) taps into the power of self expression and creativity through light. Triangular panels (both RGBW colour changing and tunable white) are linkable pieces and let you connect them together like LEGO, making shapes to however which way you wish.

Ontario Wood

The Ontario Wood exhibition space showcases and promotes makers and manufacturers who work with localy-sourced wood. Framing lumber from EACOM’s Nairn Centre sawmill and sustainable aspen plywood by Rockshield EWP have been used to create a sculptural backdrop for furniture and lighting created by Ontario craftspeople. The construction material used in the space will be dismantled and re-used by Habitat for Humanity after the show. Space designed and created by blackLAB architects inc. in partnership with Lewitt Construction, Moses Structural Engineers, and Dark Tools.

Studio North

Studio North and Prototype  is the marketplace to showcase your custom work and limited-edition collection to the design industry, media and a discerning design audience. Over 65 Canadian and international designers of the highest calibre present one-off and custom collections of furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles and surface design in a gallery-like setting.

Partisans Factory

@partisansarchitecture

Equal parts fabrication warehouse, artist studio, and lounge party, PARTISANS FACTORY will feature the design team hand-sculpting their lights all weekend alongside special guests—architect Omar Gandhi, painter Steve Driscoll, sculptor Harley Valentine, and designer Tommy Smythe. Proceeds from the lights formed with guest artists will be donated to Habitat for Humanity, Greater Toronto Area.

Stone Age Folk

The first instalment of Jaime Hayon’s year-long collaboration with Caesarstone will be unveiled at IDS17, followed by a major event during Milan Design Week in April. Titled “Stone Age Folk” Hayon will use Caesarstone as the essential component of his whimsical universe inspired by fauna – the natural world – and folklore – the mythical world. Blending fantasy with functionality, playfulness with craft, and interactivity with cultural references, Hayon will create a kaleidoscopic and harmonic installation. Visitors will recognize his signature smiling characters popping up throughout the space, alongside joyful carousels, wall panels, lights and tables.
“People tend to see Caesarstone as a material that is only used in kitchens, but I looked at it from the viewpoint of an artist and designer. With this in mind, I wanted to create my own imaginative cosmos, using the brand’s quartz material alongside other noble materials like glass and metal.” – Jaime Hayon
The installation uses over 48 different Caesarstone colours combined with metal and glass, employing traditional techniques of stone marquetry and metal crafting, showcasing Caesarstone as a precious stone.

designboom mart

Returning this year is designboom mart designed by students from RSID. The market gives the opportunity for 30 creative professionals to introduce their new products to the Canadian market.

Maker
Curated by Design Milk, local small batch makers like KROFT, Christopher Solar, and Hennepin Made will be showing their work.
