DIY Rose Painted Valentine Cake

Counting down the days to Valentines and continuing on our month of love, today we're sharing a fun cake project, perfect for a special night in with the one(s) you love.  I've been wanting to make a cake using edible decorating paper for a while now; and so when I found a set with a rose design I thought it would make a special cake for Valentines.

You Will Need:
1 - iced 5 inch high cake (6 - 8 inch round) - I used my 5 layer set (like this) which uses one cake mix for all 5 layers
1 package of edible decorating paper (sugar sheets)
1 vial of red color dust
1 vial of pink color dust
Imitation clear vanilla or lemon extract flavouring
Icing for top of cake and for piping sides (approx 1/2 cup of white icing)
Piping tool
1 food safe paint brush

To make:
—Prepare your cake. We made a 5 layer (6 inch round cake) in an ombre of white to red.  And then iced and placed the cake in the fridge until the next step.
—Remove the edible decorating paper (sugar sheets) from it's package.
—In two small saucers, pour approx 1/2 tsp of the vanilla or lemon extract flavouring.  Then sprinkle the red color dust into one, and pink into the other.  Stir each.
—Using a food safe paint brush, start to paint the lighter colours first.  I watered down the red a bit at first and painted the entire roses.  Then proceded to paint pinks on some of the petals, and then darker reds for others to create a more dynamic flower.
—Continue painting all the flowers on the sugar sheets until complete.
—Then pull out the cake from the fridge. If the icing is too dry, add another coat around the sides so that the sugar sheets will stick.
—Measure each sheet for applying to the side of the cake, as once it's applied, it will be difficult to move. Apply one of the sheets to the side of the cake and press lightly so it sticks. Apply, the second sheet, trimming for size if needed.
—Top with icing to meet the top of the sides of the sheets if needed.
—Decorate the top edge and bottom edge with to finish things off
—Top with raspberries (optional)

Enjoy!
