What To Do + See In Rome?

instagram.com/foodandcuisines

Earl will be traveling to Bologna, Italy this September as part of a Canadian journalist delegate to attend CERSAIE, an international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings and is also sneaking in a couple days to see Rome afterwards.

He'll have just two days there to see the sights really and is looking for any recommendations on where to stay on a budget and what to see!  He definitely wants to visit the Vatican while there as well as the Sistine Chapel.  So any recommendations with respect to the best way to see those and other must-see spots that could be fit into two days would be welcome!  Feel free to comment here, or send us an email here. Thank you!

Do not forget The Pantheon and the nearby Piazza Minerva and its Church Santa Maria Sopra Minerva with the "grave" of Saint Catherine of Siene (under the main Altar)

Make sure to take your passport to Vatican City to get stamped!
WalksofItaly.com has evening tours.

DEFINITELY book a tour for the Vatican/ Sistine Chapel.... you learn much more and you skip the general admission lines... well worth the price.

Since you are going to be in Bologna for at least a couple of days and since I am from Bologna, I thought some advice about my city could be useful...
Rome is so wonderful you don't need any suggestion but to walk through it and discover the beauty that lies everywhere...If you have seen the movie "the great beauty" by Sorrentino, you know what I am talking about...
Let's go back to Bologna.
You are going to be tired after Cersaie but Bologna is worth a walk in the evening: you might understand the spirit of the city even in a short stroll taken after a good dinner...
Things you cannot miss:
Piazza Maggiore: the heart of Bologna. Its dome, San Petronio, was supposed to be larger than San Pietro in Rome...That's the reason why the initial project was abandoned and the church was left unfinished...
Piazza Santo Stefano: seven churches condensed in one...A beautiful square and a wonderful complex that will give you the impression of being in Tuscany...
Towers: Asinelli, Garisenda, Arengo are all placed downtown. Once Bologna was crowded with towers symbolizing the power of the rich families that built them...Nowadays only few remain, but the impression is nonetheless...impressive!
Arcades: about 40 km in the whole city...In case it's rainy, you can forget your umbrella! In any case, they're one of the favourite spots for the inhabitants to talk, eat, sell and buy etc etc etc...

And since we talked about having a stroll after dinner...
Here some good restaurants:
Trattoria Serghei
Trattoria Biassanot
Ristorante Il tinello
Osteria Bottega.
Booking necessary during Cersaie!

Hope you'll have a nice time at Cersaie and in Bologna!
