Dispatch from Scandinavia | A Helsinki Apartment + Coterie

Today we're excited to share the home of Rikka W. one half of the blog Coterie , a blog about fashion, interiors and lifestyle based out of Helskinki, Finland.  Riika's Southern Helsinki home caught our eye recently online and then when finding their blog, we had to ask for an interview and share some photo's of her Scandinavian apartment (which they are currently selling).  Check out our Q&A below.  All photos Coterie.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.

I’m Riika, business development director by day, passionate interior decorator and blogger by night. Together with my dear friend Katriina we’re writing a lifestyle blog Coterie. (www.coterie.fi).

While Katriina keeps on building the perfect wardrobe, I decorate my dream home in the heart of Helsinki, Finland. Coterie is a mix of fashion, interior and life in general – topics that we feel passionate about.

Tell us a bit about your home.

Our apartment is located in the city center of Helsinki, Finland, in an area very close to the sea and surrounded by small cafés and boutiques. Almost all the buildings in the neighborhood are at least one hundred years old, and we love their old decorative architecture with beautiful details.

We bought the place two years ago, and it went through a complete make-over, when several walls were removed, and all the surfaces were completely remade. We wanted to respect the history of the building, and tried to capture the original spirit as well as possible with our choices of materials.

The interior is modern, which creates an interesting contrast with a traditional oak floor and ceiling ornaments made of plaster.

Favourite decor pieces (furniture, textiles, etc)

One of my favorites is an over one hundred year old mirror I found via online auction from Stockholm, Sweden. I love modern pieces of furniture, but I like to mix them with some classics and antique pieces – otherwise the home starts looking like a product catalog.

Favourite stores in Finland?

Local Helsinki on Annankatu 9, is a small concept store, which I can warmly recommend. According to its own words it’s “72% art and 28% coffee”, and besides a monthly changing art & design exhibition, they sell beautiful, carefully picked items from small producers and brands.

For tourists visiting Helsinki, a brand store of Finnish glassware company Iittala on Pohjoisesplanadi 25 is a must. Every single Finn has a piece of their timeless design in their homes – and we have easily over hundred items. :)

Favourite Finnish designers/stylists?

In fashion Katri Niskanen is my all-time favorite. She’s the winner of the first Finnish Project Runway competition from 2009, and has systematically developed her own collection since then. Especially her cocktail dresses are stunningly beautiful. katriniskanen.com

Of interior stylists I would like to mention Joanna Laajisto. The spaces she creates are all amazing. joannalaajisto.com

Favourite Finnish blogs?

Besides Joanna, there are four other excellent interior stylists, who all write also blogs. Please check more details from this post of mine here.

Thank you Riika and Katriina!
