I'm back with my second edition of One Cake Two Ways (only this time it's three) and in celebration of Valentine's Day this weekend! I wanted to make a fun set of cakes for this and so a third was added (a chocolate version) just to make things even more sweet!
So for this decorating set of cakes we have one store bought-looking cake, (just because they are so retro cool and fun), a real life version of a cake from an old video game our son used to play as a boy, called Ollo (in part of the game, Ollo gets to decorate a cake which has these extra large rosettes on them) and then a chocolate nutella and almond cake, with chocolate cupcakes to round it all out! So maybe that's really four ways!
1. For the LOVE Cake
I used the Butter Baked Goods buttercream frosting recipe to ice all of these (a favourite around here), and used my 6.5" cake pans for smaller cakes. These are pretty straightforward but for those interested, I just used one cake recipe (mix) for each cake. And half of the buttercream frosting recipe to ice each one. You can find the recipes here. I used a star icing tip for the sides of the "love" cake, a writing tip for the script and sprinkles with a few gold hearts. There are two colours of icing, a hot pink and a brighter almost magenta pink.
For the "OLLO" Cake
For the decorating of this, again, I just used the larger star tip, only swirling into a rosette-style decoration, topped with sprinkles. I used a special icing decorating set from Wilton, called Color Swirl, which allows for you to pipe 2-3 different colors at one time. I mixed a hot pink and magenta pink together. Click here to see the decorating set.
For the CHOCOLATE cake
It's chocolate cake, with Nutella in between the layers and on the top. I left the sides naked. And sprinkled with some toasted almond slices. So easy!
And then the cupcakes!
Chocolate with the rosette frosting using the star tip and the Color Swirl decorating tip!
Happy Valentine's!
