Wintery Cake Fun: Mountains and Moon Cake Toppers

Contributor post by Lyndsay Sung of Coco Cake Land

Oh I do love the glitz, warmth and generosity of the winter holiday season! All of a sudden I'm craving snowy things, gold or silver sparkly things, evergreen and pine and the sound of beautiful old crooners singing magical songs. And of course, the season of joy wouldn't be complete without some beautiful baking. To celebrate the spirit of the holidays, here's a super cute and easy cake idea - billowy white whipped cream "snow" and the cutest and most simple mountains and moon cake toppers. I was inspired by this holiday cake for the snowy cream and contrast cake!

You will need:

  • A single or double layer round cake - I made a dark chocolate cake for contrast. A gingerbread cake would work wonderfully, too!
  • Craft paper in blue, white and yellow. I made a pink cloud but opted not to include it in the final version but if you're feeling cloudy and pink, feel free to use it if you like.
  • Scissors
  • Gluestick
  • Wooden BBQ skewers
  • Scotch tape

Step One
Using your scissors, cut out some cute blue triangle shapes.

Step Two
Cut out some white triangle snowcaps. Cut a scalloped edge using your scissors, or use scalloping scissors for a more even look. Glue the snowcaps onto the blue triangles. Voila, mountains!

Step Three
Cut out a crescent moon shape in the yellow craft paper. I created a few options - I made a full moon by using a circle craft punch. I ended up going with the crescent moon but it's fun to try both.

Step Four
Cut your wooden BBQ sticks down to the size you would like them. Adhere them to your mountain and moon shapes with clear Scotch tape.

Step Five
Bake your cake according to your recipe instructions and let it cool completely. Once cool, transfer it to the cake stand or plate. In the meantime, make your whipped cream. You can also use Cool Whip if you're feeling lazy!

Step Six
Whipped cream time!

Using a butter knife or a metal offset spatula, spread the whipped cream over the cake layer. Lightly swirl the whipped cream to make it look more snowy using the flat edge of the knife or spatula.

Step Seven
Place your mountain cake toppers and moon cake topper into the whipped cream and you're all finished. Don't you just want to make snow angels beneath the crescent moon against the backdrop of a beautiful snowcapped mountain range? :)

Baker's note: because this cake uses whipped cream, I would suggest making everything beforehand and keeping the whipped cream chilled in the fridge. You can easily assemble the cake (and take pictures of it!) just before serving.

Happy holidays, everyone!

This is so whimsically charming. I absolutely love it. For some reason it reminds me of The Little Prince, but I have no idea why.
