Where in your home/apartment/city is your studio located?
I have a wonderful little studio in the basement of our home here in Portland, OR.  Having a studio at home works really well for me right now because I have two young girls, so being able to work whenever I get the chance without leaving the house lets me be as productive as possible.






What equipment/tools do you use?
I am a textile artist so my tools are my fabrics  (I love vintage!), scissors, thread, and my sewing machines. I just launched my first textile collection this past spring, so while I was working on that I was able to go back to my roots as a print maker and use collage, ink and paper- it was wonderful.



Do you have an inspiration board, and can you tell us what is inspiring you now?
My entire studio is a bit of an inspiration board. If there is something I like I pin it to my walls. I made huge pin boards using cork trivets from Ikea placed in a grid on the walls- they are totally covered now, and I am always adding to it. I also use Pinterest (pinterest.com/annajoycedesign/) a lot to keep track of images that inspire me from my favorite blogs or websites.



How do you create best (e.g. do you listen to music while you create and if so what?)

I create best in the morning after a cup of coffee! I am morning person and I love being in my studio first thing. I listen to music, pod casts, or sometimes I am so engrossed in what I am working on that silence is perfect. I need to update my music collection! My studio assistant Emma has been the DJ lately, so I am getting to know more bands.

The artist whose career I would most like to emulate is Lotta Jansdotter. I was just in New York last week and had the pleasure of going to her studio storefront and meeting Lotta! It was wonderful. I love the organic shapes she uses and am inspired by her use of color and her playful Scandinavian aesthetic.


I adore Matisse. I too have a love affair with my scissors, so his cut paper work is some of my very favorite.




The painter and printmaker Richard Diebenkorn is one of my favorites. When I was in college studying printmaking I had the honor of interning at the legendary Crown Point Press in San Francisco where they printed many of Diebenkorn's most famous prints. Seeing them up close and not under glass was such a powerful experience for me as a young artist. His color palette and line work still informs my work today.

If yours isn't, what would be your perfect studio?

I do love my little studio in the basement, but a little bit of natural light would be nice!
My dream studio would be located here in Portland, have a small storefront area and a nice large work space in the back. I would love it to be on a sweet little street with coffee and snacks near by and of TONS of windows!  I am hoping that in the next few years my dream studio will become a reality!
