PayPal Unveils Device for Mobile Payments

Just a quick heads up for those in the craft fair circuit this summer - if you haven't heard already, PayPal has unveiled "Paypal Here", a mobile payment solution for small businesses to accept card payments.  The device is a pocket-size triangle-shaped credit card reader and when plugged into an iPhone or Android audio jack, the smartphone is transformed into a POS device.   Currently the card reader is available at select merchants in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Hong Kong and you can download the app here.  (Via designtaxi).

I wonder - do you automatically qualify or do you need a credit check like you do with a merchant account or more importantly the Square. The Square is great and the fees are reasonable and there is no monthly fee - bonus for small crafters. I'd be interested to see how paypal has set there's up since they do charge a monthly fee for their services - Square had the market to themselves for quite sometime, competition was bound to pop up at sometime and paypal certainly has a lot going for them since they're already in the biz so to speak...

Interesting... I'll have to look into this when I join the world of cellphones.

I hope Square gets some royalties for this. I mean it's obvious Square was the first on the block. And Square is by far superior. But good to have both in case you need the money to go directly to your PayPal account.
Thanks for sharing Jan! xo, Katy
