London Shop Tour: Selvedge

A guest contributor post by Andrea from Lotus Events

What started out as an independent print magazine covering fine textiles, Selvedge went on to open a dry goods online site followed by a brick and mortar shop based in North London that perfectly reflects the magazine – inspiring, beautifully crafted and well curated.

Bringing together a selection of goods that brings to life the ethos of the magazine, the shop is stocked with a mix of haberdashery, textile related books and a collection of handmade products featured from their online drygoods store. Some favourites include the dolls by Jess Brown (shown above). Made from cashmere sweaters and antique trims and buttons found at flea markets, Jess originally started making the dolls for her daughter. The Vaxbo tea towels from Halsingland, “Land of Linen”, are also pretty special especially when you realize that they are made from the only operating flax spinning and weaving mill in Sweden. Oh, and how about those gorgeous fabric birdhouses by Tamar Mogendorff made from old linen, embroidery, tweed and even newspaper to give it a patchwork feel.

Selvedge also produces three craft fairs a year in the Spring, Autumn and Winter. This is one of the reasons I first discovered their retail shop and as a side note, the vendors at these shows have some of the best displays I have ever seen at a fair! Pencil the next date in your diary - Saturday, December 10th from 10-5pm at the St. Augustine’s Church Hall, Langdon Park Road, London N6 5QG.

I'm totally hooked on their magazine after visiting the shop. Their current issue has stories on the history of fine linens in France and Spanish folk costumes. All beautifully written and depicted. A subscription might be in the xmas wish list this year ;)
