Shop Tour: Hoxton Monster Supply Shop

Guest post by Andrea from lotus events / Got Craft?

Hello Poppytalk readers! It’s Andrea from lotus events / Got Craft? and I am pleased to share some of my favourite London, UK shops with you! Originally from Vancouver, BC, I moved to London last February to spend a year experiencing life on the other side of the pond. To kick off the first shop tour, we head to Hoxton in London’s East End, a creative hub dating back to the 17th century.

The Hoxton Street Monster Supply Shop is East London’s premier purveyor of everyday and bespoke goods for the living, dead and undead. Reminiscent in a style of a 1940s war-time shop with wooden shelving and staff in traditional brown aprons, they stock a pharmacopoeia of different types of fear, a complete range of edible human preserves and everyday household essentials like Fang Floss and Zombie Mints.

Behind the shelves of Monster Supplies, there's an entrance to another secret place. The Ministry of Stories aims to inspire a nation of storytellers by offering free writing workshops and mentoring to young people aged 8-18.

I love the Ministry of Stories (in theory, we've never been to any of the workshops as my son is too young and we moved out of the area). They do often have a presence at events around East London thought and my 2-year old has a monster death certificate on his bedroom wall. :)

This is completely awesome. My sister and I would go nuts in a store like this

Do you know of 826nyc? It's this exact idea--crazy shop, writing workshop in the back--it's been around for years. The NYC shop is a superhero store and I think there are about 3-4 more around the United States--all founded by Dave Eggers (author). I know there's one in California and one in Michigan, so a bit closer to visit for US/Canada folks!

Many thanks for the splendid feature on our shop! All of the packaging and design is created by the talented London-based graphic design studio We Made This:

Stay tuned for the Fall 2011 launch of Hoxton Street Monster Supplies' online shop, where you can order Cubed Earwax and other delights with the click of a button!
