Weekend Project: Beekeeping
From the people who brought us those colourful urban chicken coops, the Eglu we posted about last summer, UK-based company Omlet has now launched an urban bee keeping version aptly named, Beehaus.
Built with the urban beekeeper in mind, one can now enjoy the fascinating experience of keeping bees in your own garden or rooftop! These hives are specifically designed for urban areas. Each one has enough space to maintain a colony for one year in one hive versus the usual two.
According to a Guardian interview with Johannes Paul, owner of Omlet, "Bees numbers have declined so much in recent years that it's possible we're not going to be able to pollinate all the crops that we need to. The reason for this is that most bee hives are kept in agricultural areas, and so if more hives are kept in towns and cities it will help the population in general".
Omlet shows everything a newbie beekeeper needs to know. From starter kits, online how-to video's, and ordering bees. Of course this isn't for everyone, and they do recommend you consult with your neighbors first; but still, its another clever step closer to a greener world.

Terrific to see beekeeping has made it to Poppytalk! I'm an urban "holistic" beekeper in Los Angeles.
this is amazing. I love the idea! i may just have to check one of these out, I have been wanting bees for a while, we have lots (I am an herbalist and gardner) in the gardens, but haven't had the chance to obtain a hive... Thanks for the great post!

This is great! I keep bees in Philadelphia and urban beekeeping is certainly on the rise here. It looks like the trendy plastic boxes would stand up to the elements.
This has become a big thing in NYC as well. Love the idea of doing it but definitely takes some devotion.
This is so cool and something I had never thought of before - which isn't really saying a lot :)
I'm confused... how can urban beekeeping be discussed without any mention of Pushing Daisies?! At least an outrageously adorable screen cap?
