Sycamore Street Press: Feed the Birds

I think that we should all feed the birds. Especially the hummingbirds. And it wouldn't hurt to use one of these gorgeous hand-blown glass feeders by Chihuly-trained artist Peter Reuthlinger, either.

Watching hummingbirds flutter and drink has become one of my favorite summer pastimes. You can buy nectar, but I've found the homemade stuff is best and simple to make. Once you do, just fill up your feeder, hang it outside, and wait for the little flying jewels to arrive...

Hummingbird Nectar Recipe by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center
  1. Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water and bring to a boil to kill any bacteria or mold present.
  2. Cool and fill feeder.
  3. Extra sugar water may be stored in a refrigerator.
  4. Red dye should not be added.

I concur that we should all feed the birds. We have a little glass feeder in our hollyhock bed and love watching the hummingbirds from our window.

Pretty pictures!

Thanks Will and Candace! Glass feeders look so pretty when hanging in the sunlight...especially with the hummingbirds flitting around. And yes, wildlife experts actually encourage people to feed them...esp into the fall, when actual flower nectar becomes more scarce, and they haven't migrated all the way south yet.
