Weekend Project: Make a Kitchen Shelf

I don't know about you but I'm an open shelving type girl. I don't know how to close a kitchen cabinet door; or maybe it's not I don't know how, more than I leave them open when I'm in the kitchen once I do open one, just in case I need something from there again (a bad habit). So shelves are definitely the way to go for me and wherever I moved (when I rented), I used to remove the doors off the upper cabinets always, painted them inside if they needed it (which they usually did) and voila - easy form and function. Then I just put the doors back up when I moved out. But if you have been thinking about open shelving but have been afraid of taking the plunge, here's a pretty good DIY from the folks at Home Depot. Their solution is economical too. A fun weekend project!

i was just thinking about removing the doors to my upper kitchen cabinets and wallpapering inside to add some visual interest & cover some discoloration.

im the same, i leave all cupboard doors open mostly because i dont see why i should close it when im cooking if im going to need something out of it in two seconds. since i live in a small space, im often hitting my head on the open doors... i should really learn, or just take them off altogether. these open shelves look like a great solution, my landlord might go crazy though if i start drilling into walls...

I've been toying over those floating shelve sets you can buy but I want to store my magimix blender on it and a whole load of bottles so I dont think they would stand up to the weight. But this idea is better and I can adjust the shelves for when I eventually buy my big pepper mill!! i want... i will do..!

I love this look, too. We live in a new house now, so hubs would kinda kill me. But the plan is on the back shelf for a future house. Thanks for the link and have a great weekend.

I think that is cool idea. It might make me clean my cabinet junk out!!
Maybe, I would save open shelving for the good stuff.

Jan I think you and I are alike in so many ways! I always leave cupboards and drawers opened and my husband quietly shuts them all. I wish I could live with open shelving, but i don't know if I could keep up with the charade of being "tidy".
Have a good weekend!

mm - wallpapering would look awesome! and probably not a problem if it's a rental.

katie f - i've hit my head often too. part of the hazards of convenience

lori - thanks for stopping by!

Googlover - saving open shelving for the good stuff - a good idea.

janis - oh that's hilarious you do that too. nice husband to quietly close them - i know it's a bit tricky that - that's why i have all white dishes. sorta helps me look tidier than i really am. its the dust though that i have a hard time with

I often leave my (clean) dishwasher open but that's more out of laziness really not so functional given that it takes up most of my kitchen floor that way...
but i love keeping my kitchen pretties out on my counters in easy reach - then I use the pretty things more often too!

We tore down our dysfunctional cabinets last year because I wanted open shelving. The week I had planned to install the shelves, I instead spent repairing the mess of a wall the previous owners left us. This might just be what I was waiting for...

I'm totally an open shelving kind of person. Everyone tells me it will get greasy and dusty, but I don't care. One day I'll have my open shelving!

DUST.

No way, man - no way.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been researching kitchen shelves for months and nothing was really screaming at me...until now! I am going to tell my hubby this is what I want. We have already taken the upper cabinets down and prepared the walls. I am so glad I didn't settle for something I wasn't going to like. Thanks again!
