Inspiration: Succulents Bouquet How-To

I don't know about you guys, but I'm really loving succulents right now. So when I came across these succulent arrangements at Flora Grubb over the weekend I had to show you, if you haven't come across them already from reading my related post earlier. The floral designer for The Cutting Garden blog, Susie Nadler teaches an incredibly simple technique to incorporate succulents into a bouquet or centerpiece. You can get all the supplies and how-to info here and in that post she also links to a video from the ladies at Flower Duet who feature the same technique to create a bridal bouquet. What's cool about these bouquets is that they are completely sustainable, when you’re finished with your succulent cuttings, you can plant them right back in your garden and they’ll take root. Click here to see the rest of Flora's how-to.

Jan, thanks so much for writing about us - I'm honored!! As far as the succulents go, the most common problem people have in growing them is absolutely overwatering. Succulents need very well-drained soil (a pot with a drainage hole, if you're growing them in a container, and preferably a potting soil designed specifically for succulents and cacti). Let the soil dry out between waterings, and also be sure your plants are getting enough light... they do like a lot of bright, indirect light.

Hope this helps! I'm not an expert by any means (I do love plants and flowers so much, but I'm not a pro gardener), but I've learned a lot about succulents since I started working with them in the bouquets.

I love this and plan to do one as well for our wedding in September. the thing I would like to know is what are the variety of succulents used in this bouquet? I recognize the echevaria, are the others sedums? What type? Thanks so much for this post and link to the video!

Hi Sam&Cliff -

I will see if Suzie will reply here, if I con't have luck contacting her and you don't see a reply here soon, you could contact Flora Grubbs yourself by clicking on the link in the post.

I do not have much luck with them inside, with exception to a Christmas Cactus and an aloe plant in a very sunny window in thekitchen. But I have a number of them potted out on my patio. My yard has a sprinkler system, so they do not go in the yard. Otherwise I would love to do a beautiful rock and succulent garden. I am rock collector too. The ones on my patio, I NEVER water. They are only watered when it rains. (other than when I first plant them) And by Golly they are thriving there! So, not sure if that is a tip or not but...

Thanks anon - where do you live. i think if we left them out here in our rainforest they would completely drown.

I love succulent bouquets, this post is great, especially the close-ups of adding the wire stems.

I totally agree that succulents are beautiful in a bouquet! My cousin used them for her wedding flowers and I fell in love with the color and texture that they added. Thank you for the tutorial, I'll try this out in my next arrangement! http://elizabethwraydesign.com/
