Recently I have become enamored with the species of animal called Bovidae, or Bovids. They are a species of 140 different cloven-hoofed mammals, including water buffalo, antelopes, gazelles, sheep, goats, muskox, yaks, domestic cattle, and my favorite: the bison. I am not sure what it is about the enormous furry horned beast that I find so amazing, but lately I am in love.
Not surprisingly, Etsy is chock full of bison-related stuff. Here are some of my favorites:
First, the not so ubiquitous and very cool bison tee . This one by Etsy Seller CritterJitters. This one is on my list of "to-gets."
Next we have the bison riding a bike (with a bunch of other animals on his back) print. Otherwise known as Why are those animals on a bike (Question Mark) . This clever print is by Etsy Seller VROOOOOM.
And for those of us secretly wishing for a bison head over our fireplace (but are also sort of creeped out by the idea), we have the Billy Jr. Medium Bison Head cardboard taxidermy by Etsy seller cj8n.
Speaking of creepy, I am in love with Etsy seller GrandOleBestiary's Ulysses L Bison III - Bison Photographic Art Print . Oh, and in case you are wondering, Grand Ole Bestiary is (and I quote) "a collection of faux-antique, anthropomorphic, mythological curios that were recovered from an ancient archival vault found buried deep inside the core of a metaphysical holy mountain." Awesome.
Totally not creepy and most definitely adorable is Etsy seller Studio Lyon's rendition of the bison .
Last but certainly not least are these really beautiful (love the color) linocut cards of bison by Etsy seller melissakate.
Are you a fan of the bison and other bovidae? Stay tuned, as artist Amy Ruppel and I are collaborating on an upcoming show featuring paintings of the hairy horned beasts of the bovid family scheduled to open at Rare Device in November. We'll keep you posted.
Moooo, and happy Monday.

Wonderful! Thank you so much for featuring my bison! :)
i love bison. when my friend was studying abroad in cork, ireland we went to a zoo near there & there was this wonderful field of bison.... & one of them came right up to the fence about a foot away from me. yeah. it was great, as are all these picks. a cool, cool animal.
I love bison too. Have you seen this bison necklace from my Etsy metal teammate Laurel Hill? It's awesome: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=29772781
one of my favorite jokes is about a buffalo!
What did the mommy buffalo say to the baby buffalo on his first day of school?
Bi-Son!
perfect joke for your post;]
Thanks for this post. I too love Bison. It all started at the Bronx Zoo over ten years ago, looking at them in the morning mist in their habitat-struck by their quiet regal beauty.
i love the bison... that t-shirt will so be part of my husband's christmas gifts. i have been on the look out for a 3-d stag head... headed over to etsy now.
Ever since my friend started a band called Bison (Vancouver psychedelic metal) I've had Bison's (the animal) on my brain. Proud beasts they are.
