Hulaseventy Loves Lists: Summer Classics: The Drive-In

by Hulaseventy

I don't know about you, but I miss drive-ins. I really do. Summer rolls around each year and I find myself dreaming of drive-ins.

As far as summer classics go, they're right up there with road trips and picnics. Sadly, they're slowly disappearing which is why the idea behind the guerilla drive-in is such a good thing. Basically, organizers show movies in random locations-- in parking lots, on warehouse walls, whatever works. Viewers are contacted by email a few days before the showing and given all the necessary information. People, I love this. I really love this.

16mm movies shown in secret locations? Yes, please. Yes, I would like that very much.

Shown from a 1970s school projector mounted on a 1977 BMW R100/7 sidecar rig? Even better.

Mobmov (the drive-in that drives in) boasts hundreds of chapters all over the world. Can't find one near you? Do it yourself. I'll bring the popcorn.

See you next week, friends!

crazy coincidence. We're heading to the drive-in TONIGHT to see Harry Potter :)

We went to a drive in movie a few weeks ago! It was fun to do once, but stadium theater seating is much more comfortable—and you don't run the risk of someone's huge SUV blocking your view! : )

You know it's funny - I grew up with drive-ins. I grew up in Tennessee and we had a few drive-ins around town well after most had closed around the country. I was lucky to have experienced that. The next best thing is outdoor movies. Here in Seattle, we have several outdoor movie festivals each summer. Perfect for summer night picnics!

I live in Lexington, VA, where we have the only community run, not for profit drive-in in the country. A few years ago it nearly went under, but a group of people in the community came together to save it. I've gone twice this summer. This is inspiring me to keep going!

Oh my goodness thank you for posting this. I live in Cincinnati and am lucky enough to live near a still functioning drive-in. I make it a point to go at least once during each summer. They do a double feature every night and it is so much fun. I really like the idea of the guerilla drive in though, probably a great way to build a community.

I love (and miss) drive-ins, too! I'm going to search for a chapter near me!

I agree, all SUVs in the back, please!

Thanks for your post on drive-ins!

I love this. Really, really love it. Hubby and I were just conversating the other day about what a shame the death of the drive-in is...so glad to see it lives on!

This is awesome! The Alamo Drafthouse in Texas used to do a rolling roadshow where they traveled the country with an inflatable movie screen and showed movies in the places that inspired them (for instance, The Warriors at Coney Island, Jaws at Martha's Vineyard, Escape from Alcatraz at Alcatraz Island, etc). But I don't think they are doing it anymore, which is too bad.
