Canadian House and Home had this great idea in their special feature publication, "Condos, Lofts & Apartments" recently with this Umbra Flybrary bookshelf, by placing a tray atop the books and then using the books as a shelf for a bedside table, placing an alarm clock and flowers on it. This is such good idea - It really makes a feature of your books. I'm a big fan of 'showing off' my books and not shutting them away.
I love the idea of using it as a bedside table too ;)
I have to say...that's genius! My bedside table is stacked with tons of books anyway. Instead of getting rid of the books, I could just get rid of the table!
It appears from the photograph that the book hangs off a piece of metal - although it may look stylish - this way of storing books in the long and even short term is not a good idea. The weight of the book is stressing the book's spine and eventually the weight and the added stress of objects on top of the books will damage the book.
I agree with gk2829--I house and repair damaged books all day and the first thing I thought when I saw this was "OH NO! That's terrible for the book!" I know of plenty of books with text blocks too heavy to even be stored spine-out on a shelf without damage, so this would definitely be a disaster. Eventually the text block would rip right out of the case (cover).
