before and after magazine, a magazine for graphic designers on "how to design cool stuff" sometimes has some great reference tutorials on pdf to download for free. i thought this one, "on how to design easy cover patterns" was a great one to start out with when going for any type of background project. other free downloadable pdf articles are:
