A Poppytalk Holiday Giveaway!

Today we are super-thrilled to launch a Holiday Giveaway on the blog! Since this spring Laura of Specimental Design has been focusing on creating a one-of-a-kind piece especially for Poppytalk as a giveaway for the holidays! Together we chose turquoise as the stone of choice for this giveaway, since it is the stone that represents the holiday month of December!

Laura built the ring around a massive nugget of stabilized Sleeping Beauty turquoise. The turquoise has a fantastic, organic shape, with plenty of interesting surface texture. The bezel is built of fine and sterling silver. The texture on the bezel was created by a long process of heating the metals to molten, manipulating them with a soldering pick, and then allowing them to cool before reheating them. The band is a wide 1/2", and is shown here with a hammered texture. Laura has chosen to oxidize the band to a deep black, in order to lend contrast to the bright blue of the turquoise. The value of this giveaway is appox. $200!

This ring is completely customizable. You can have it built to fit any finger, as she has not yet permanently set the turquoise into the bezel. If you prefer a thinner, 3/8" band, that is also a possibility. As well, you can choose any of the band textures you see here. Laura can also leave the band plain, un-oxidized silver if you wish. Click here and here on how to find your ring size online.

TO ENTER:
Leave a comment here (at this post) telling us "why you think you should win this ring?" Nice and simple. Nothing uncool like jumping hoops or having to follow anyone, anywhere! We will choose a winner (2 weeks from today) on December 1st! The deadline to enter the contest is November 30th at 9pm Pacific! Good luck!

Laura is a high school Art teacher, and mother to three little guys, aged three, five, and six. She is also a graduate of the Emily Carr Institute (now University) of Art and Design in Vancouver, with a major in Sculpture and a minor in Painting. Visit her shop here.

I would love to win this ring as a "push" present to my self, because when I asked my hubby where such present was after 27 hours in labor, he just stared blankly, having never heard of such!!

your ring is so unique and beautiful, reminds me of Arizona where I grew up

Wow! First of all, thank you so much for offering your beautiful ring as a giveaway. It's, honestly, one of the prettiest rings I've ever seen. I'm not used to saying why I deserve things, but I'll say that I'm turning 50 years old at the end of November. It's a number I can't really relate to yet (I feel much younger), but am trying to embrace. Looking online, I thought a ring would be a nice present to myself to commemorate my half-century when I came across your give-away on Poppytalk. Perhaps it was meant to be?

This is fab! I would love to rock this ring at all my holiday parties (and probably never take it off, ha!) and chat with them about the lovely Pappytalk blog!

I would love to win this ring because my grandfather wore a turquoise ring everyday as far back as I can remember- and this ring would remind me of him. PLUS I just love the texture of the stone and the metals, so beautiful!

I would like to win the ring so I can give it as a Christmas present to one of my best friends. Considering we're both really poor college students, it'd be awesome to see the look on her face. :)

Because Turquoise is my favorite, favorite, favorite stone, and I haven't had a little something for me in a very long time. The 2 little girls come first!

My sisters 30th bday is around the corner in december and it is a huge mileSTONE that she is terrified of. My other sisters and I are going to support her thru it and I remembered the first ring she ever got was
From my grandma Tilly when she turned 12. It was a turquoise stone since it's her birthstone! My sister went on to become a jewelry designer and named
Her company after my grandma who inspired her. This
Ring would be the perfect rite of passage for her into her adult years, and in memory of my grandma.

It would match the earrings I bought my wife for our anniversary

This ring will incite so many comments, and I am a walking commercial! I would sell the designers ability, creativity and jewelry design to all who meet me in hopes of bringing her future business for her and her 3 kids! It's all about giving back. If I am blessed with the ring I will take up the quest of advertising for this lady!

I think I should win this ring because turquoise enhances communication (which I need as a neonatal ICU nurse when talking with new mom/dads!) and just as important it makes my soul feel really good (in a way that is hard for me to describe)

Salt said...

honestly, there is not reason I should win this ring, excepting you have said to leave a comment at the end so you can choose who will win. It is a gorgeous ring, and yes, I would rock it everywhere or find the perfect person to give it to! : )

Salt said...

Just cuz you said you would pick a winner. I love turquoise and only have one piece with just a little tiny bit on there. AND, it really kinda reminds me of a lovely bowl of ice cream...mint choc. chip or something.

my grammie and I have always shared a passion for jewelry. this ring reminds me of her and how as a little girl I fell in love with turquoise because of the jewelry she wears. this is a beautiful piece of art and I would love to share that with her.

OH MY GOODNESS.
Why I think I should win this ring? Well, I don't necessarily think I SHOULD win this ring, but Lord knows I'd love to. I've never really owned any bit of jewelry, or clothing, for that matter, worth so much $$. Oh yes, winning such a gorgeous thing would be crazy incredible.

this ring is perfect for my little sister's unique ring treasury. being her older sister, i love being the one who indulges this outrageous excess and while each ring has a tale to tell, not one of them can claim to have been won in a poppytalk competition! nor can they claim to be as unique! this is why i would like very much to win this competition, but if i don't, i know where to find a unique ring in the future now!

A while ago I have decided on the color of my wedding dress. It is tourqouise. Tourqouise, because this color just shines around me - im starting to think that it is trully something from the inside . And I would love to shine into this world with a beauty of a ring like that. And bring a little bit od color into other peoples lives, too.

This ring is amazing and I would love to own it because it matches a green necklace I inherited after my grandmother passed away. I would love to have something to match the necklace that reminds me so much of her.

this ring needs me. we belong together. plain and simple.

I love this ring because the stone is rugged and imperfect, yet that's what makes it perfectly beautiful! A nice representation of most of us, yes? I also love supporting etsy sellers and it would be a great conversation starter about etsy!

mareike said...

i'd love to win the ring because it's beautiful and fits my style (i like natural stuff). i usually don't wear rings but i'd love to get into wearing rings more often and i'm sure that this one would be just perfect :D

I would so love to gift my beloved thirteen year-old son with this ring. He lives in the "middle ground" of gender and spirit, expressing masculinity and femininity in equal measure. His recent entry into public school (from a wonderful small parent/teacher co-op) was a disastrous experience, full of harrassment and hatefulness. Two months later, we are homeschooling, and trying to help him feel loved and safe again. He has *always* loved blue - I dressed him in turquoise as an infant! He loves jewelry, and now that he is nor in school, he is *free* to wear it. "Sleeping Beauty"? I dream for him a world where his beauty is accepted by the wide-awake world.

I would love to win this beautiful ring! I love turquoise so much, it is my birthstone (happy birthday to me soon), and my name is Laura! Turquoise is also my husband's birthstone and his birthday is Dec. 1st, the day this giveaway ends, and he is a special ed teacher! I would love to tell everyone that it's Sleeping Beauty turquoise!
Serendipity!

I have been hunting for the perfect turquoise ring for some time now. I've been scouring antique malls and boutiques and when I discovered this giveaway I was so excited! This ring is the perfect blend of contemporary and organic and I would so love to have it be the beginning of my turquoise ring collection!

I would love to win this unique ring because after surviving cancer surgery and going through chemo this year, I deserve a treat and I've come to love jewelry even more now that I'm recovering.

This ring is beyond fabulous! It has such a balance between the natural and the nurtured! If I had this ring it would be a constant reminder as a designer, to look for inspiration in every day and to never compromise creativity for validation. Thanks for the opportunity!

i should win because turquoise compliments my skin tones!

The ring is very creative and a beautiful piece of art. I would love to own this ring and to wear it to art shows where I show and sell my greeting cards and other items. I am starting to learn metalsmithing and would love to have this as a referral point and would use it as a teaching tool. The artist did a great job of enhancing the stone with the setting. Great job! Thanks. Lucy

it is raw, beautiful and exquisitely designed, like all of my mom's work.. and i would give it to her!

I should win the ring because I have stopped biting my nails and this would be a lovely reward to show off on much prettier hands. I haven't worn rings in years, because I didn't want to call attention to my hands. Now I am ready. And, Laura, your work is simply beautiful!

I would love to win this ring so my new husband will have something to give me for Christmas. We were married 4 weeks ago and it was wonderful! 2 weeks later, he fell off a ladder and landed in the hospital with emergency surgery and a titanium rod in his leg. He still cannot do much for himself and since we were only married a short time when this happened I had not added him to my health insurance yet. Needless to say no one will be getting Christmas gifts this year since we already owe the hospital almost double out yearly income. It would mean a lot to him I think to have something to present his new wife on Christmas.

I would like to win this ring so that I can wear it for its magical qualities!

It is said that among the Aboriginal folks of the Southwestern United States, Turquoise is believed to be a connector of Earth and Sky...sounds pretty grouding to me.

I would be thrilled to win this special ring!
